4th annual Stop the Drugs/Stop the Violence Crusade to be held this Saturday

Stop the Drugs Stop the Violence: “Love can Build a Bridge”

The fourth annual Stop the Drugs Stop the Violence Crusade will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 28 at Riverfront Park in Pottstown. The theme of this year’s campaign, conducted by The Harris Family Ministries, Inc., is “Love Can Build a Bridge.” The love of Jesus Christ can help those suffering from violence and addictions and unite the entire community. Crusade sponsors are Mt. Herman Missionary Church, Bethel AME Community Church and the Pottstown Downtown Improvement District Authority.

This free event is open to the public. All church groups, community groups, businesses and individuals interested in the fight against drugs and violence are invited to attend and network.

In addition to free food, beverages and entertainment, there will be plenty of resource information available for attendees to take. Representatives of various organizations will be on hand for any questions people may have.
This year’s program participants include panelists Dr. Rocio Nell, Executive Director of Montgomery County Emergency services; Dr. Reed Lindley, Pottstown School District Superintendent; Rev. Joseph Bishop of Victory Outreach International; Heather Levandoski, Assistant District Attorney of Montgomery County narcotics Unit; and Richard Dodridge, Executive Director of Philadelphia Teen Challenge, who will also be the keynote speaker.

Music will be provided by the 40-voice First Baptist Church of Indian Trail, NC choir, directed by Jonathan Schallmo; the Victory Outreach International band and choir; and the 20-voice Teen Challenge combined Men’s & Women’s choir, directed by Sister Sherry. Face painting and other arts and crafts will be available to entertain the whole family.

Stop the Drugs/Stop the Violence Crusade set for July 28th at Riverfront Park

On Saturday, July 28th, from noon until 4 pm, the Harris Family Ministries brings their annual Stop the Drugs /Stop the Violence Crusade to Pottstown’s Riverfront Park on College Drive, across from the west campus of Montgomery County Community College. The theme this year is “Love Can Build a Bridge,” and the keynote speaker is the Rev. Richard Dodridge, Executive Director of Philadelphia Teen Challenge.  The event is sponsored by The Harris Family Ministries, Mt. Herman Missionary Baptist Church, and Bethel AME Community Church.

Please spread the word! If you know of someone who has a problem with sustance abuse, and they would like help, please let them know.  If you want more information so that you can help someone…please come out.  There will be lots of information, prayer, free food and non alcoholic beverages, music, and several guest speakers.

Trinity Reformed UCC to hold “Playground Day” this Saturday!

Parents: Do you want your kids to learn the wonderful, simple games of your own childhood so they can keep themselves entertained outside this summer?

Pastor Lisa Martin of Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ reports that they will be holding their second “Playground Day” this Saturday, June 30 from 1-3 pm. Kids can learn how to play marbles, jacks, hopscotch, jump rope and other simple, fun outdoor games. And they will be giving away the equipment at the end!

If any Positively!Pottstown readers would like to drop off some sidewalk chalk at the church, that was a hot item last weekend!

Trinity Reformed UCC announces FREE summer programming

This info comes from Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ. I’m sorry I did not get up an announcement about their Playground Day that they held on June 23rd. They were teaching kids “old-fashioned outdoor games like marbles, jacks, double-dutch jump rope, hula hoop, and a variety of versions of hopscotch.” Then they gave all the equipment away. Does anyone else want to sponsor something like this? I think it sounds quite fun — even for the grownups! I’d be willing to pitch in, too.

ACT — Arts and Crafts at Trinity
We are sharing the hobbies we love with anyone who wants to learn! We meet from 2-4:30 pm on Tuesdays all summer. Activities will include watercolors, crocheting, collage, and “Christmas in July” handcrafts. We are supplying all materials so there is no cost. This is for adults and children ten and up. Youth Mission Week
Youth from five area churches will be coming together July 29 through August 3 to participate in Youth Mission Week. Youth live at the church during the week and help with simple repairs, landscaping and clean-up for low-income or elderly Pottstown residents, and also at local non-profit agencies. There are still spaces available for youth who want to participate and homeowners or non-profits that would like some help. We can also use adult volunteers (subject to our safe-church policy.) All forms and more information can be found at http://pottstownyouthgroup.weebly.com/. Youth must be entering 6th grade in the fall. There is no cost for the program, but donations are very welcome.

 Founded in 2004, Westminster Kantorei is an auditioned chamber choir from the renowned Westminster Choir College specializing in early and contemporary music. The ensemble, which is composed of approximately 24 graduate and undergraduate students, performs regularly with some of America’s leading specialists in Baroque music, including collaborations with violinist Nancy Wilson and vocal ensemble Fuma Sacra.  Recent seasons have included performances of Bach’s Missa brevis in G Minor, cantatas, and passions, including the St. Matthew Passion at Avery Fisher Hall, with the Westminster Choir and the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Kurt Masur. The ensemble has also performed works by Monteverdi (Vespers of 1610, Sestina and Lamento della Ninfa), Buxtehude (Membra Jesu nostri), Schütz, Schein, Telemann, Zelenka, Victoria, and Palestrina, as well as a concert of Latin American Baroque music.
Westminster Kantorei has also commissioned and premiered many works by such composers as Caleb Burhans, James Blachly, Doug Helvering, Philip Rice, Nathan Jones and Stefan Young.  This year, the ensemble premieres new works by Blake Henson, Daniel Elder, and the internationally acclaimed Swedish composer Sven-David Sandström, commissioned for the ensemble by the Soli Deo Gloria Foundation and the Westminster Choir College Department of Sacred Music.

The concert program will include: “Musikalische exequien” by Heinrich Schutz, “The Glory and the Dream” by Richard Rodney Bennett, and “Psalm 67” by Sven-David Sandström.  The stunningly beautiful funeral music of Schutz’s Musikalische exequien is considered one of the masterpieces of the early Baroque period.  William Wordsworth’s poetic masterpiece “Intimations of Immortality” provides the text for Bennett’s The Glory and the Dream, who, in addition to a 50-year career performing and writing jazz, has composed many classic film scores.  Sandström’s Psalm 67 is a newly-commissioned work that received its world premier by this ensemble in October of 2011.  Our special guests for this concert will be the select choir from Daniel Boone High School in Birdsboro, PA.  Led by their conductor, Erin Benn, this outstanding high school ensemble will open the concert with performances of “I’ve Got the Music in Me” arranged by Deke Sharon and “With a Lily in Your Hand” by Eric Whitacre,.

Coventry Singers to celebrate 40 years with concert this Sunday

Join the Coventry Singers on Sunday, April 22nd at 3 pm at Cedarville United Methodist Church for their 40th Anniversary Concert “We Sang for Joy.”  The choir is celebrating 40 years of making beautiful music by welcoming back former directors and choir members. Joe Hoover and Cheryl Markofski will join current director Julie Eurillo in conducting the choir. Alumni members – including my dad, Richard Repko! – will join in the singing of the finale.
