MOSAIC gallery hosts free reception this evening from 7-9 pm

by Sharon McGinley

MOSAIC Community Land Trust is hosting a reception this evening at its gallery at 10 S. Hanover Street to celebrate the opening of its current exhibit, Nurturing Hope. The show features area photographer Sharon Merkel and painter Sharon McGinley. The reception is being held from 7-9 pm. It’s free and all are welcome!

You may know MOSAIC Community Land Trust for bringing Pottstown its first community garden at 423 Chestnut Street, but MOSAIC also utilizes its office space at 10 S. Hanover Street as an art gallery. This show highlights the beauty in nature and in urban spaces, much like a community garden.

Like a garden nestled into a congested city block, the spiritual paintings of Sharon McGinley contrast with the graphic urban photos of Sharon Merkel to embody the hope and vitality of an urban garden.

In her artist’s statement, photographer Sharon Merkel says of her work, “The images explore the place where man and nature meet. I am fascinated with this intersection, the place where each affects the other.” Her photos of urban buildings and barns often feature intersections with a brilliant sky or a lone tree.

Sharon McGinley’s paintings include bright colors, whimsy, and nature on a biblical or essential level. “I explore the inner-connectedness of all things, the impermanence of earthly life and the joys and sorrows we experience on our journeys,” she says.

MOSAIC receives a standard 30% commission on all art sales, so a purchase not only supports these local artists, but also the community garden, arts, and affordable housing mission of MOSAIC Community Land Trust.

This show is being curated by MOSAIC summer interns Amanda Hoffman and Blake Wrigley, who spent their early years in Pottstown and graduated from Boyertown High School. Blake is a recent graduate of Messiah College and Amanda is a senior art major there.

Nurturing Hope will run from July 4-July 28. All are welcome to an opening reception on Friday, July 6 from 7-9pm; reception sponsored by LointerHOME; food provided by Grumpy’s Handcarved Sandwiches. The MOSAIC gallery is located at 10 S. Hanover Street in Pottstown. Regular gallery hours are Thursday-Saturday from 4-7 pm.

Free plants at MOSAIC Community Garden tonight & tomorrow morning!

Calling all area gardeners!

The 8th grade students at St. Aloysius School started a bunch of plants from seedlings this past spring with help from Strogus Flower Shop and funding from the Pottstown Area Health & Wellness Foundation. They gave the starter plants to their parents and parishioners, but they had many more left over.

Anna Brendle from the Pottstown Area Health & Wellness Foundation suggested they get in touch with us. So… there are a bunch of good-looking plants at the rear of the garden now. The MOSAIC Community Garden is at 423 Chestnut Street, Pottstown, PA 19464. I’ll be there from 6-7:30 pm tonight and from 8-9:30 tomorrow morning if you want to stop by and pick some up. They’re FREE! There are mostly squash and zucchini, but also some spinach, peppers, and tomatoes.

After tomorrow morning, I’ll set the remainders on the rear curb of the garden, in the alley. Spread the word!

Political drama FARRAGUT NORTH comes to Tri-PAC

There’s plenty to do in Pottstown this weekend, but absolutely don’t forget to make room to see the new play opening at Tri-PAC. Farragut North only runs this weekend and next; get your tickets now! Here’s the teaser and details from Tri-PAC…

The political drama Farragut North comes to the Tri-County Performing Arts Center, 245 E. High Street, Pottstown for two weekends only, April 20-April 29.  Come and watch backroom politics play out during this political season!

It’s January in Des Moines, Iowa, during a tight primary race. Wunderkind Stephen Bellamy is young, aggressive, talented, and tremendously successful as press secretary for Governor Morris in his bid to run for President. Thrown into the scheming backroom politics of more seasoned operatives, Stephen struggles between the lust for power and loyalty to the cause. Named for the Metro Station that is the center of the Washington, D.C. lobbyist district, Farragut North was the major motion picture, THE IDES OF MARCH, starting George Clooney, Ryan Gosling, Paul Giamatti, Marisa Tomei, Evan Rachel Wood, and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

The Tri-PAC cast includes Tyler Horn, Steve Reazor, Katherine Leary, Phil Ballantine,  Ken Mumma, Carly Fried, Porter Eidam, and Philip Seader.

Tickets for all shows at the Tri-PAC are available online. Please note that seating is now reserved, so go to www.tripac.org to purchase your tickets now or call 610.970.1199 to ensure the best seats.  Showtimes are 8:00 PM on Friday and Saturday, and 3:00 PM on Sunday.   Tickets range from $13 for children 12 and under, $15 for students and seniors (65+), and $17 for adults. Discounts are available for groups of 10 or more.  When available, tickets will be sold at the door.

Village Productions is a dynamic nonprofit performing arts organization that seeks to strengthen community, inspire creative exploration, educate, and entertain, through the presentation of quality performing arts events and educational opportunities geared toward a diverse audience. The new Tri-County Performing Arts Center at 245 E. High Street, Pottstown, PA is the home of Village Productions. Hooping, Gallery on High & Roller Derby Rockstars!

It’s hard to keep up with what’s going on in Pottstown these days!

In about 20 minutes, I will be trying out hula-hooping in Smith Plaza. Stop what you’re doing and head to downtown Pottstown, right in front of Borough Hall, to join “Serene Circles Hooping with Raeann.” The invite is on Facebook here. It says, “Join us at High Street Yoga for a fun afternoon of hooping. Hooping improves overall balance, improves cardio and endurance, alleviates stress, keeps your core flexible, and burns anywhere from 200-500 calories per hour! Hooping is a great alternative to sit-ups and is a total-body workout that has the potential to improve your flexibility and balance while strengthening and toning the muscles of the back, abdomen, arms and legs. This is a great way to have fun with friends and burn calories!”

After that, I’m going to catch part of the reception at The Gallery on High for their current show, “Re-Creative.” I can’t wait to see what these artists have done with recycled, upcycled and salvages materials. If I had gotten my act together, I would have done something with all the bits and pieces of stuff left in my yard by the former tenant, who was a scrapper. I have been saving all the odds and ends and plan to mix them together into a piece called “Scrapper’s Stew.” Maybe I’ll have it ready for next year’s show…

And don’t forget this evening marks the season opener for the Roller Derby Rockstars, Pottstown’s one and only women’s roller derby team!  I’ve got to go to a birthday party so I’ll miss this, but if you’re in town, get over to the 422 Sportsplex at 1400 Industrial Highway, Pottstown, PA 19464. Doors open at 6 pm; first whistle at 7 pm. Get info here.

Did you know that April is Family ReadingMonth? I did not know that. When my kids were little it was always family reading month! There’s nothing better than tuning out the noise of the rest of the world and settling into the world of a children’s book with your child on your lap or by your side, eager to turn the pages to find out what happens next.

The Pottstown Regional Public Library at 500 E. High Street is celebrating Family Reading Month with a chance for families to read together and win prizes! See details below. To learn more and become a library member, stop by in person, give a call (610-970-6551) or visit their website at http://ppl.mclinc.org.

Read with a family member for 20 minutes a day for 20 days until May 4, 2012. Registration opens April 1 and you must register by April 13, 2012 then… Read! Read! Read!

All books read for Family Reading Month must be borrowed from Pottstown Regional Public Library.

Read even MORE! Mark an “X” on each day you read for at least 20 minutes with a family member. Try to keep a list of titles—it’s fun to watch your list grow! You must bring your completed calendar into the library by May 4, 2012 to be eligible for prizes.

SPECIAL PRIZE DRAWING!
