Pottstown’s Schuylkill River Festival this Saturday!
This year’s Schuylkill Riverfest takes place on Saturday, Oct 12, 2013 from noon until 6pm at Riverfront Park (140 College Drive in Pottstown).
Learn to Kayak along the river between 12 and 4:30 where kayaks and equipment will be available for a low cost ($15/half hour) through the day. Take a kayak tour at 4:30: Take a 2-mile paddle trip to Tow Path Park – shuttle & equipment is available at a small cost of $35. Historic River Walks at 1:00pm AND 4:00pm – presented by the staff of Pottsgrove Manor.
Artists and Crafters will be present to display their creative arts and local music will be heard throughout the day!
Join in for the First Annual “ARTICLE EVENT” in which we provide your pallet (a bike and recycled materials) and YOU provide the creativity! Please contact Sheila Dugan for more information at 610-323-5400 – We will have a Peoples Choice award given to the most creative bike – $200!
Magician-Illusionist Kyle & Kelly will entertain at 5pm and then move into the downtown at Steel River Playhouse where they will wow the adults as they await the curtain call for “Spring Awakening” – (This musical is suggested for 15 years and older – adult content) – OR after a lovely dinner at the local restaurants (where more local music will be performed) – join ARTFusion19464 for their show “We Were Soldiers” between 6pm and 8pm in the downtown.
Live music throughout the streets and art throughout the restaurants! Come see what’s happening in Pottstown! 
Other Activities include Belly Dance demonstrations, Reiki, Palm Reading, Card Reading, A Drum Circle, (bring your drum and join in), Yoga Demonstrations and Martial Arts, Minute Massages, and more . Food vendors and A Beer Garden will also be available for everyone to enjoy this fun day!
Children’s Activities will include Pony Rides ($) and a Petting Zoo from 12:30 to 4:30, Crafts and Face Painting from 12:00 to 6:00 pm brought to you by ArtFusion19464, and at 5:00 pm enjoy the Magical Illusions of Kyle and Kelly. Rainbow the Clown will be present all day long to have balloon sculptures and face painting as well.
Help send The Pottstown High School AP Gov. and AP Calc. students to Greece! They will be selling baked goods to help them raise funds for this fabulous opportunity.
Don’t forget from 6 to 8pm the fun continues in the downtown! Join our restaurants for some fabulous food and end at ARTFusion19464 for their “We were Soldiers” Display – stories about Vietnam from Veterans of the war. ALSO Steel River Playhouse is having their Musical “Spring Awakening” (adult themed) starting at 8pm. Kyle & Kelly – Illusionists will be in the lobby between 6:30 and 7:30 to entertain you while you enjoy the atmosphere of the theater. Grumpy’s will be having live music by Michael Kropp, local musician playing classic acoustic pop-rock as well as a complimentary light hors-d’œuvre spread. Visit the Brick House for their nightly specials and enjoy their newest menu items. West End Alley is now open at 105 High St. Juan Carlos welcomes Russell Ferrara and Acoustic Duo “Lights Out” will be playing along the street in the downtown between 6pm and 8pm.

MOSAIC has a table on Oct. 19th at the Hill School and is lending a helping hand on the 25th along with the Hill School as part of the CARES endeavor! CARES, which stands for Community, Awareness, Responsibility, Empowerment and Sustainability is a two-day event pioneered by the Hill School, the Borough of Pottstown and Pottstown School District.
The events were designed to increase community activism, spruce up Pottstown’s core neighborhood, and create momentum for additional efforts.

It may be fall, but “Spring Awakening” is at Steel River Playhouse
The rock musical Spring Awakening opened last weekend at Steel River Playhouse at 245 E. High Street in Pottstown. (Actor Matt Degaetano is shown at left.) It will run Thursdays through Sundays, through October 13th. There will be a facilitated discussion this evening following the show. It will be led by Dr. Marvin Marsh of First Baptist Church in Pottstown and Jena Stoltzfus of Creative Health. The show this evening begins at 7:30 pm. Pottstown Regional Public Library Joins Foundation Center’s National Network
This comes to us from the Pottstown Regional Public Library…
Thanks to a grant from the Pottstown Area Health & Wellness Foundation, nonprofit organizations and other grant-seekers in the tri-county area now have access to a valuable new collection of resources at Pottstown Regional Public Library. The library has been accepted as a member of the Funding Information Network of the Foundation Center of New York.
The Foundation Center is the leading authority on connecting grant-seeking nonprofit organizations with philanthropic institutions. Established in 1956, the Foundation Center of New York supports a nationwide network of resource centers, such as the one at Pottstown Regional Public Library. These resources provide the tools and training needed to connect grant-seekers with grant-makers. For more info about the Foundation Center, visit foundationcenter.org.
The Pottstown Regional Public Library now offers free access to detailed information on grant-makers and how to apply for grants. The Foundation Directory Online, Foundation Grants to Individuals Online, Foundation Center Philanthropy In/Sight, print directories, and proposal writing guides are some of the available resources. The Foundation Directory Online allows a grant-seeker to search by their area of interest, their geographic location, the size of grant, and other parameters.
Trained staff members and computers are available to help searchers make the best use of these resources. As a member of the Funding Information Network, the Pottstown Regional Public Library will be holding training sessions on how to effectively use these resources and identify potential funders.

“When We Were Soldiers” opens tomorrow at ArtFusion 19464
I am so grateful and proud to have been part of “When We Were Soldiers,” an exhibit showcasing the stories, memories, and artifacts of local Vietnam veterans. It opens tomorrow at ArtFusion 19464, at 254 E. High Street, in Pottstown. See the Mercury’s awesome coverage here.
An opening reception and welcome home ceremony will run from 5-8 pm, beginning at the Borough parking lot at High and Charlotte Streets. There will be a motorcycle cavalcade and speakers to give the “welcome home” that these veterans never received. I, along with writer Parker Blaney, interviewed the vets this past summer and worked with them to draft narratives of their experiences, from getting drafted to their service, and their experiences coming home, re-integrating into civilian life, and the long-term effects of war. These men were brave once again to have this dialogue and agree to share it with the general public.
Cathy Paretti of ArtFusion has put their stories on homemade paper and combined them with photos and all kinds of articles that these veterans and others brought back with them. It will be a truly educational exhibit, appropriate for middle school students and older, about this time in our country’s history. Please plan to visit sometime between Sept. 20 – Nov. 9.

MCCC Hosts 10th Annual Scenes of the Schuylkill River Heritage Area Art Show
Here’s an announcement from Montgomery County Community College. They have a lovely art gallery at their West Campus in Pottstown. Check it out this fall!
Montgomery County Community College will host the Tenth Annual Scenes of the Schuylkill River Heritage Area Art Show, Aug. 28-Oct. 18, at the Fine Arts Gallery, North Hall, 16 High Street, Pottstown.
Sponsored by the Schuylkill River National & State Heritage Area, the art show features 83 original pieces of artwork that highlights the beautiful and unique qualities of the Schuylkill River Heritage Area.
Philadelphia artist Susannah Hart Thomer won Best of Show for her watercolor, “Escalation,” which depicts the spiral staircase located outside the Philadelphia Museum of Art leading to the Schuylkill River.
Second place went to Jonathan Bond, Kempton, Berks County, for his painting, “Lutz Tannery,” and third place went to Teresa McWilliams Farina, Royersford, for her pastel, “Pennypacker Mills Tranquility.” The Staff Choice Award went to Lori Quinque-Quinn, Perkiomenville, for her watercolor painting, “The Coyle Farm Winter Sheep.”
Honorable mentions were awarded to Walt Hug, Birdsboro, for his photograph, “Midnight at Memorial Hall,” and Arnold Winkler, Blue Bell, for his digital composite, “Valley Forge.”
This year’s show was juried by Terry Newman, owner of Newman Galleries in Philadelphia. He spent several hours examining the 107 entries before making his selections.
